Navigating the Canadian immigration medical exam? Don't let uncertainty slow you down. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from required tests to ensuring a smooth process.

How Canada’s Express Entry System Works: Fast-Track Permanent Residency for Skilled Professionals

Canada’s Express Entry system is a highly efficient immigration pathway designed for skilled workers aiming to become permanent residents of Canada. Managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), this competitive, points-based immigration system evaluates applicants using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)—scoring them based on factors like age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.

A central feature of this program is the Express Entry draw, which typically occurs every two weeks. During each draw, IRCC issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to top-scoring candidates in the CRS pool. At GTA Immigration Physicians we help you navigate your immigration journey by conducting your immigration medical exam.

Understanding the Express Entry Selection Process

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a merit-based framework used to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Applicants receive a CRS score based on the following core components:

  • Age – Must be 18 years or older, with younger applicants receiving more points.

  • Work Experience – At least one year of continuous, full-time skilled work experience under Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC).

  • Education – Points are awarded for secondary and post-secondary credentials, with higher education increasing your score.

  • Language Proficiency – Demonstrated fluency in English or French through approved tests aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).

  • Adaptability – Additional points for Canadian work/study experience, job offers, or family ties in Canada.

Every two weeks, IRCC conducts Express Entry draws, inviting those with the highest CRS scores to apply for Canadian permanent residency.

🚨 Major CRS Update: Job Offer Points Removed (March 2025)

As of March 25, 2025, IRCC has removed CRS points awarded for job offers. This impacts:

  • Senior Management (NOC 00) roles which previously earned 200 points

  • All other eligible job offers which previously earned 50 points

This change shifts focus to core human capital factors, meaning your age, education, work history, and language skills are now more important than ever. If you're in the pool, now’s the time to reassess your CRS score and identify areas for improvement.

What Hasn’t Changed: Importance of Job Offers for Program Eligibility

While job offers no longer boost CRS points, they remain essential for eligibility in certain immigration streams, including:

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

  • Specific Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams

If your pathway requires a job offer, ensure you still include this information in your Express Entry profile.

How to Calculate Your CRS Score

Use the official CRS calculator provided by IRCC to estimate your score and understand where you stand: 👉 Calculate your CRS score here

This tool considers all core factors and helps you plan strategically for upcoming draws.

Am I Eligible for Express Entry?

To qualify for Canada’s Express Entry system, you must meet the requirements of one of these three federal immigration programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – For professionals with foreign work experience and academic credentials.

  2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – For applicants with skilled work experience gained in Canada.

  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – For individuals with experience in skilled trades, and a valid job offer or Canadian trade certification.

Some draws are program-specific, while others are general draws based solely on CRS score.
