Comprehensive Guide to Immigration Medical Exams

Apr 2, 2025

Navigating the Canadian immigration medical exam? Don't let uncertainty slow you down. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from required tests to ensuring a smooth process.

If you are planning to move to Canada, you will likely be requested by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenships Canada) to complete a medical examination before obtaining PR (permanent residency). This process ensures that all applicants and their families meet the country’s health standards. The medical exam is not just a routine step—it plays a crucial role in maintaining public health and safety. IRCC may also request this Immigration Medical Examination for some study/work permits/refugees coming to Canada and also some temporary visitors.

This guide will walk you through the essential medical tests required for Canadian immigration, why they matter, the costs involved, and where to book your exam.

Understanding the Immigration Medical Exam (IME)

An Immigration Medical Exam (IME) is a required assessment for individuals seeking to immigrate to Canada. It evaluates an applicant’s overall health to ensure they do not have medical conditions that could pose a risk to public health or place excessive demand on Canada’s Healthcare and social services.

The requirement for an IME is based on the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and its related regulations. These legal frameworks establish the health criteria that applicants must satisfy to be considered admissible to Canada. By enforcing these regulations, Canada aims to uphold its humanitarian obligations while ensuring the sustainability of its healthcare system.

The IME is carried out by Panel Physicians authorized by IRCC and provides essential health information to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Although Panel Physicians in Canada conduct the medical examinations, it is IRCC that reviews the reports and determines the final admissibility of applicants.

During the exam, you will undergo a medical history review, physical check-up, blood work and chest x-ray. This evaluation is an important measure to safeguard both immigrants moving to Canada as well as those already residing in Canada.

Where to Get an Immigration Medical Exam

To undergo an Immigration Medical Exam in Canada, you must visit a Panel Physician approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These designated doctors are available across the country, making it convenient to find one nearby. IRCC Panel Physicians have been given special designations by Immigration Canada to carry out Immigration Medical Examinations. You can locate a Panel Physician by visiting the official IRCC website and using their search tool. It is advisable to book an appointment well in advance to avoid delays in your immigration process.

Medical Tests Required for Canada Immigration

Medical History and Current Medications

The physician will review your medical history, including any existing health conditions and medications you are currently taking. It is important that all applicants bring an up-to-date record of all their medical health problems/medications and any previous surgeries. Providing accurate and complete medical records is important for a smooth immigration process.

General Health Check

A Panel Physician will conduct a physical examination (including height/weight and an eye test)  to identify any serious health conditions. This is a crucial step in ensuring applicants meet Canada’s medical standards. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to your appointment as they will be needed for an accurate vision assessment. Please note that a blood pressure reading is no longer required by IRCC.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are performed to screen for infectious diseases such as HIV, syphilis, and also to check kidney function. These tests help confirm that applicants do not pose a health risk to the general public and also do not have conditions which may significantly impact the Canadian Healthcare system. The specific tests done will depend on the age of the applicant as mandated by Immigration Canada. Please note that urine tests have been removed by IRCC and no longer are a part of the Immigration Medical Examination.

Chest X-Ray

Applicants aged 11 years old and over are required to undergo a chest x-ray to check for lung diseases such as Tuberculosis (TB). This is an essential part of the medical exam to protect public health. Pregnant applicants should inform their Panel Physician, as special accommodations may be made to ensure their safety and that of their unborn child. The Panel Physician at GTA Immigration Physicians will outline the different options available for pregnant clients undergoing their IME. Please be aware that IRCC requires a chest x-ray to be carried out before the entire IME is submitted.

Mental Health/Mental State Examination

A mental health evaluation may be part of the medical exam to check for any psychiatric conditions that could impact an applicant’s ability to adapt to life in Canada. Typically there is a requirement for this in any applicant over the age of 75 however it may also be required in others depending on their previous medical history. The requirement of whether this examination is needed will be made by your highly experienced Panel Physician at GTA Immigration Physicians during the assessment.

Additional Medical Tests

In some cases depending on your age, medical history, or any potential health concerns, the Panel Physician may request additional tests. These could include more detailed blood work, urine tests, or other diagnostic assessments to ensure a complete medical report for your immigration application. Your GTA Immigration Panel Physician will outline these to you if they are required.

Validity of the Immigration Medical Exam

As per Immigration Canada the results of your medical exam are valid for 12 months from the date of the examination. Proper planning is essential to ensure your medical exam remains valid throughout your immigration process.
